Every disease process is multifactorial. For instance, let’s look at Polio… Prior to vaccines, 70% of those that tested positive for polio by means of viral culture were completely asymptomatic. That means they were infected, and actively shedding the virus, but had no symptoms of disease whatsoever. Less than 1% went on to develop polio myelitis, a condition involving the motor neurons that results in paralysis. So, was the polio virus causing paralysis or were there other causal variables involved, predisposing someone to that condition? The answer is obvious, 70% of people infected with polio had no symptoms whatsoever. That means that the virus wasn’t causal. The same logic can be applied to the etiology of any condition rooted in viral infection.
@DaniBeckman Thanks, after retirement 2015 peripheral MS symptoms slowly dissolved to almost nothing over 3 years. Second COVID hit 10.2023, reactivated MS, numb right arm/ fingers, fun & games with micturition etc, fatigue that Modafinil does not keep away, utterly unsurprised vs the paper.
Astonished to see nary a mention, even in Discussion, of reactivation of EBV as a cofactor. With all the data now suggesting a role for EBV in at least a substantial subset of MS, the questions remaining about EBV reactivation and the course of the different subtypes of MS once disease is already established, and the data separately showing potential association of SARS-CoV-2 with reactivation of either EBV or other herpesviruses, this seems rather derelict. Even if not possible within this study design, these considerations need to be on the platter for future work.
@DaniBeckman @TinaMey90814508 Look at the #HERVs activation especially #HERV-w in #MS and : pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/37091988/
@DaniBeckman And guess how many LC patients will even get an MRI, even with clinical signs?
@DaniBeckman A relative got LongCovid in addition to her MS disease. It drives me crazy that she no longer wears a mask and doesn't want to hear about Corona anymore. 😠
@DaniBeckman @DaniBeckman do you know of any studies out yet connecting long COVID to subsequent MS dx?
