We're told that successful communication is a two-way street. So when it comes to any type of communication training, it makes sense to have the sender and receiver undergo this training together.

When definitions of whiteness get limited to white people, critiques of whiteness get perceived as personal attacks rather than criticisms of ideologies, practices, institutions, etc., which do not need the presence of people racialized as white to operate.

Social skills, related to communication, organization and conflict resolution, should absolutely be taught at home and reinforced @school. But that indicates that there *should* be agreement on what they look like as a baseline. Does that convo take place in any school community?

Kids don't plan to come to school to get into trouble. Behaviour is a form of communication and quite often - the reason for it will make you sad, not angry.

Educators respecting differences between their own lived experiences & those of their students is key. Judging experiences (or students) for what they don’t have imposes the teacher’s standard of what is “normal” on kids & perpetuates educational inequity instead of disrupting it

A devastating misunderstanding is that the education system is fundamentally just & only needs tweaking. We can't tweak our way to antiracism. If we're serious about racial equity, we understand the system is fundamentally unjust and scale our responses accordingly.

While I agree w/this sentiment, there is a cavernous disconnect between what educators are being asked to do to get students on track (mentally and emotionally) and the reality of balancing both. Employers need to show that their employees mental & physical health are paramount.

In one of my 2nd gr music classes we sang a partner game w/movement where students would join arms & spin. 1 girl wiped her arm off w/her hand after joining arms with the only Black student in class. We discussed it on the spot. Kids learn bias early, so we should start early.

❓: Why does the kid have a bad reputation? What factors within the culture of the school perpetuate it? I agree w/fresh start, but let’s look at the why & fix that while supporting the student. Let’s not act as saviors to a student we’re viewing through a deficit lens.
