当人心发热，追求某些让 人着迷的欢乐的时候，永恒的真理看起来就仅仅是微不足道的事情。 在败坏的情欲的作用下，人作出最谬误的判断。像一位受贿的判官， 理智作出虚假的判决。在一个秤盘上是无尽喜乐祝福的永世，在另一 头是转眼即逝的金钱或名誉的得益。
一台天平，尽管砝码是相同的，但如果称盘不等同，就会产生 错误;同样，尽管人所用的争辩理据很有力量，然而，如果内心被不 圣洁的情感左右产生偏见，称盘就不会按着真理和公义倾斜。
你们要依从那些引导你们的，且要顺服；因他们为你们的灵魂时刻警醒，好像那将来交账的人。你们要使他们交的时候有快乐，不至忧愁；若忧愁就与你们无益了。(希伯来书13:17 和合本)

每件事在神的计划中都有明确的定位，只是有些事看起来比其它事更大，更重要罢了。这样看来，历史的运行虽然无限复杂，但在神眼中却是一个整体。〈小要理问答〉很优美地把这项真理和它的理由总结成一句话：「神的谕旨是他在万古之初，按自己的美意所定的旨意，因此他为自己的荣耀预定一切将有的事。」
〈西敏信条〉：「神从永恒，本着他自己的旨意，定下最明智、最神圣的计划，他自主地、绝不改变地决定一切将要成就的事。不过，神绝不是罪恶之源，他不剥夺被造者的自由意志，而且也不剥夺「第二因」的自由性或偶然性，反而加以确立。」
万军之耶和华起誓说：我怎样思想，必照样成就；我怎样定意，必照样成立，就是在我地上打折亚述人，在我山上将他践踏。他加的轭必离开以色列人；他加的重担必离开他们的肩头。这是向全地所定的旨意；这是向万国所伸出的手。万军之耶和华既然定意，谁能废弃呢？他的手已经伸出，谁能转回呢？—以赛亚书
人类整个历史都是神永恒心意的彰显，即使最微小的细节也不例外。神的谕旨不是神遇到突发状况才想出来的权宜之计，而是神在创世以先就定好了，万事万物都包含在其中，在神没有突发事件。（《基督教预定论》）
手懒的，要受贫穷；手勤的，却要富足。夏天聚敛的，是智慧之子；收割时沉睡的，是贻羞之子。(箴言10:4-5 和合本)
统治欲一旦在傲慢的心灵中扎下根来，就会逐渐生长，逐步挺进，直至抵达王座。要获得这样的进展并不需要什么东西，而只需要肆无忌惮的野心。但是无耻的野心只能对一个被邪恶和奢侈败坏了的民族起作用。
