According to AARP, biggest impediment to mobility of “old people” is driving mandates/car dependence. Driving mandates dramatically reduce accessibility & impede safety for the elderly. We need more news columnists who aren’t hiding their biases behind fake concerns.

Inspired tonight at a community meeting. I heard, “I never see anyone biking” [so we don’t need bike infra] & a woman spoke up, “we aren’t building for today, we are building for the future”. This was echoed by others. I’ve a feeling I’m not in #CoralGables anymore. #safestreets

We should start by banning setbacks, the ubiquitous mandates that all homes reserve space in front for a decorative front lawn to begin with. It’s not just a water issue, it also increases the cost of housing and the usefulness of homes.

A typical European car is parked 92% of the time. It spends 1/5th of its driving time looking for parking. Its 5 seats only move 1.5 people. 86% of its fuel never reaches the wheels, & most of the energy that does, moves the car, not people. Sound efficient? HT @circulareconomy

Today, cities sink millions of dollars into public investments before securing any taxable private wealth to fund them. This is a risk we can’t keep taking on. Before the Suburban Experiment, private investment would justify public investment, which secured long-term stability.
