Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2005) A noir comedy, with the over-complexity of the genre but with more absurdity and things going wrong While it doesn’t always land it has great humour. But it’s the performances of RDJ, Kilmer and Monaghan that make this so great

Gone Girl (2012) Based on the popular novel, this is full of twists as it goes in unexpected directions. As it unfolds it’s complicated characters Brilliantly directed from Fincher and with fantastic performances by Pike and Affleck. Thrilling and thoughtful. This is a must see

Unforgiven (1992) The award-winning western, because it juxtaposes the genre. Taking out all of the glamour and heroism. Showing it to be a depressing, immoral and exaggerated lifestyle Eastwood is great as both actor and director and joined by a great supporting cast

Mystic River (2003) An intricate hard-hitting story. Eastwood’s direction is solid if the cinematography’s a bit off (exposure) and very mumbly What makes it is the character depth and fantastic conflicted performances of Penn, Robbins and Harden, deserving their awards

Sherlock Jr. (1924) The classic Buster Keaton film full of his physical comedy and wild stunts. Though only in the second half in the film-within-a-film portion This is the epitome of silent era slapstick. And manages to flesh-out 2 stories in its 45 minutes
