Immersive reality. . . VR may be a thousand pictures. With the risks of using emotion to enhance the effect of memory, should we be more cautious to use VR/AR/immersive/360 in education? #EDU6323
"Polling" can help learners collectively converse with instructors real-time. Instructors can "read" the room and provide customized formative feedback. When actively engaged, learner motivation increases. #EDU6323
Wish "polling" was called "surveying." When I think of polls I think of stats related to multiple choice answers. Poll Everywhere has many more options. #EDU6323
Sparked by our discussion of Wiki textbooks (Wk5), yesterday my faculty decided to use an open source free ebook for an intensive computer foundations course we're building, from dbooks.org. Their content combines open source content and material from blogs. #EDU6323
Kelly's philosophy on access changes how we should approach education. Learners are gaining skills in finding, assessing, and manipulating information. Information itself is dynamic as content is subject to change. #EDU6323
Shared representations in a scalable network (Kelly) changes how learners receive feedback - education is not an isolated learner-teacher interaction, nor is it isolated to the physical building, what books sit on the shelves, or who is in the room. #EDU6323
From Wesch's video, interesting how videos allow learners to self-reflect, increasing value when videos are shared and also strengthening later recall. Seems in line with our social bookmarking activity. #EDU6323
At first I was against Wikipedia because of its inconsistency - we cannot expect all articles to be of the same quality at all times. Perhaps we can use it to help students think critically to judge material and compare with other sources? Like textbooks or news outlets? #EDU6323
Jimmy Wales made a convincing argument FOR Wikipedia. His focus on "quality over process" reminds me of Miller's focus on deep learning and on deep structural components of concepts. #EDU6323
Tools I'd add to Dr. Watwood's list are basecamp basecamp.com (project management/tracking tool) and monday.com (colleague suggested) #EDU6323
I prefer an LMS like Blackboard or Canvas over FB for teaching or training as LMS is less distracting, its learning analytics are more contained, it separates personal/work/school life, and institutionally licensed accounts can add a layer of cyber security. #EDU6323
I don't currently use an RSS feed. As an instructor, I see its benefit to efficiently aggregate large volumes of information from many different sources in a timely way. Personally, I enjoy navigating information organically so prefer visiting other websites and blogs. #EDU6323
For early adopters, or for those resistant, scaffolding and structure may support uptake in social bookmarking. How might we as educators monitor or vet strong sources without suffocating the learning environment? #EDU6323
While social bookmarking flourished in Bruff's crypto writing sems, it wasn't so popular in an intro, required stats course. Would such a strategy work better in subject areas with evolving content? #EDU6323
Social bookmarking allows our peers to shine light to our blind spots through community research, with potential for reducing our initial biases on a topic. #EDU6323
Online searches might disproportionately favor the viewpoints of those who spearhead the search enterprise. Might some minority or marginalized groups unknowingly favor biased or oppressive viewpoints of the majority group if they fail to identify info authorship? #EDU6323
Garrett & Thompson's views support Boyd's stance that critical thinking & ethics must accompany learners while navigating an ever growing informational landscape. Steering algorithms towards neutrality will take time, but teaching learners how to learn can start now. #EDU6323
Interesting to view my colleague of 10 yrs, David Castañeda's, eLearning Industry article linked in @bwatwood's blog post (bwatwood.edublogs.org/2020/07/13/two…). Oh how blogs connect everyone! #EDU6323
Blogging positions learners in an active role. Learners engage with new content, connect with peers, expand to the global network, and self-reflect. Such is in alignment with Miller's "course redesign" goal of reducing passive "lectures" and supporting learner mastery #EDU6323
