A sad state of affairs for #pathology in Africa and some countries in Asia where the ratio of pathologists per million population is all red 🔴 as depicted in this groundbreaking map published in 2022 by pathologist Dr Andrey Bychkov as shared by RCPA. While there are over 108,000 pathologists in 162 countries worldwide, over two-thirds of the total pathologist workforce are located in 10 countries. This data reveals a clear disparity of pathologists worldwide. The fact that ⅔ of the global pathologist workforce is located in 10 countries while all other countries have the remaining ⅓ is a pointer to the great inequity in pathology diagnostic services with most parts of Africa being grossly underserved. As stated by RCPA, there is a great need for more #pathologists in these underserved areas as well as the continued need to advocate and actively engage in promoting pathology in global health, with programs such as Pathology Education Outreach initiative, helping to provide quality education and training in the the affected underserved regions. 🔬🧪 🧫 🧬
