Extremely saddened and triggered to see yet another trainee’s life lost to suicide. Contrary to what major academic journals may imply, residents aren’t “complaining” for no reason. Physician suicide is a public health crisis. My heart goes out to the community at my alma mater.

ask those "hard" questions. That made it easy to open up to her, and I always admired her thoughts. Nakita also was an advocate. She was an active member in SNMA during medical school and our GW White Coats for Black Lives. We protested together in 2020 in DC 📢🪧. (3/x)

This is my dear friend, Nakita. Nakita and I were medical school classmates and both interns in New York City. Nakita tragically took her own life on May 26. She is such a beautiful soul. She was so fun to be around. She was intelligent, charismatic, and confident. (1/x)

My opinion: if we want equitable access to educational opportunities, we should create structured procedural rotations in the ICU/CCU. Not only are they good for residents, prior studies (i.e. by @michelle_mourad) have shown they’re good for patients too!

A major themes arose: in unstructured learning environments where self-advocacy is required at access educational opportunities, women performed fewer procedures. But in well-structured and supervised settings, gender disparities in procedural volume did not exist.

In the ICU, allocation was unstructured and residents picked for procedures tended to be 1) louder/more vocal, 2) easily/quickly identify as a ‘proceduralist’ early in training, 3) have better relationship with the fellow. These people also tended to be men more often.
