Pinniped whiskers are the largest & most innervated among mammals. Their hair shafts fx as a biomechanical filter; EI stiffness testing shows they are anisotropic. Low EI of beaded whiskers may enhance sensitivity to small changes in flow from prey. journals.plos.org/plosone/articl…

I've received news that Dan "Woody" Hartman has passed. His seminal work on FL manatees formed the knowledge-base for a lot of us studying sirenians. There's no replacement for hrs of observation of your study animal. Rest In Peace Woody. The torch is passed on . . .
