and that recognition is what resulted in my giving this new platform the benefit of the doubt and not immediately deleting it and instead looking it up. For another, less jaded creator, that name recognition may have been enough for them to trust this person and say yes.
Even in a supposed closed system, I actually don’t want a third party AI to be able to scrape my art actually. But what’s more upsetting is NONE of this AI stuff is mentioned in the opening email. It’s disappointing especially as I do remember this person from their days on tapas
The people they’d be inviting onto the “groundbreakers” program would be paid to have an AI scrape their webcomic so users could create visual responses to whatever prompts. This is framed as a unique collaborative experience but also my IP is getting scraped.
In the original email, zero mention of AI or any unique selling points of the new platform. However, their front page set off some red flags for me so I checked out the FAQ and yeah.
I got an email today about a new start up in webcomics called storygrounds. Normally I ignore this kind of mail but I am going to share it, and also what I found on storygrounds website. Spoiler: they’re asking artists to consent to AI models being trained on their webcomics

But GenAI in areas of human creativity is harmful when used to replace creatives. It's disruptive in education, politics & the economy.
