Working, working, working... Thankfully cleaning, weighing and putting seed into the cool room and database is a never-ending job! Keep an eye out on our socials for some interesting updates with our seed. seedingvictoria.com.au
Equipment perfect for seed collection & cleaning can already be in your household. Dan is cleaning some callitris seed which still had plenty of leaves present. The round holes of kitchen seive work well filtering out debris without allowing any seed through. Ph: D Frost
How hardy are these sweet bursaria (Bursaria spinosa) plants? We didn't collect seed from these little goers, but just admired their tenacity! Photos: Dan Frost
One of the wild friends that Dan came across when collecting Bursaria seed last week. Check out that blue inner-arm on this praying mantis! Dan left this branch alone so as not to disrupt the praying mantis' day (though did snap a photo!). Photo: Dan Frost
Today is the International Day of Forests, and we're thinking about the incredible forests & woodlands across our continent. Did you know that eucalypts are the dominant tree in the majority of Australian forests and woodlands? #ForestDay #LoveAGum
Happy #internationdayofforests. I haven't taken the time in forests recently that my brain needs for happiness. I've been lucky enough to explore a lot of forests in my life (recreationally or through ecological work) & I hope that never ends.
New paper out today in the journal Wildlife Research. We conducted the first detailed investigation into the habitat requirements of the glossy grass skink, and provide yet more evidence that they’re a threatened species. publish.csiro.au/WR/WR23102 @chapple_lab
Today Dan and Elle caught up with Bianca from Leigh Catchment Group for some seed production area planning - part of our collaborative "Banking on a Greener Future: A Seeding Victoria and Leigh Catchment Group Initiative" project, funded by the City of Ballarat.
Sieving and re-sieving seed to separate them from other "stuff" - old petals, sticks, leaves, seed pods, chaff... All kinds of things! Sieve-sizing for seed cleaning is one of the things we teach in our workshops! If you're interested in workshops, email [email protected]
2023 was a great year for #orchid seed in Tas! 🎉The Royal Tasmanian Botanic Gardens made their first collection of Paraprasophyllum limnetes for our Critically Endangered project. Thanks to @Kew_MSBUK for project 💵.🔗 Project info: seedpartnership.org.au/critically-end…
Having a look through some golden wattle (Acacia pycnantha) seed. Some seed predation happens with insect species where the larvae burrows into the seed coating, eats the seed embryo, and then moves onto the next seed.
A benefit of seed production areas is that they can give an indication of timing for wild populations too - saves us visiting sites just to find that we are too early or too late. It isn't fool-proof, but definitely helps us with our timing
Cleaning and weighing sticky everlasting seed (Xerochrysum viscosum) can be a fiddly job! Lucky they are so pretty 🌼
Check out these pesky ants who have found our stash of harvested Lomandra in the hot house... working together to carry seed all the way back to their nest. Trapezing. Juggling. Passing to each other. We are simultaneously impressed and annoyed 😅
Wildlife-spotting during seed collection is made up of mainly insects & birds, but we also come across other friends, like echidnas! A good reminder that we share our landscapes with other creatures & that we should only be taking a portion of seed from wild communities.
Gold dust wattle seed pods - when we collect seed, it goes through a number of stages in the cleaning process. Dan always says: "the last 20% of seed cleaning takes 80% of the effort". The first round of cleaning dislodges most of the seed, then the last 20% gets fiddly!
A couple of hidden treasures found by Dan while collecting Acacia implexa! This is another reason why we have to be mindful when collecting - so many other creatures use these plants too. Photos: Dan Frost
𝐂𝐡𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐦𝐚𝐬 𝐁𝐞𝐞𝐭𝐥𝐞 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞! We need your help to track down the Pindarus Christmas Beetle, 𝐴𝑛𝑜𝑝𝑙𝑜𝑔𝑛𝑎𝑡ℎ𝑢𝑠 𝑝𝑖𝑛𝑑𝑎𝑟𝑢𝑠. This species was described from Black Mountain in the ACT and was supposedly very common in the Canberra area in the 50s
Some bags full of treasure - a massive haul of lightwood (Acacia implexa), and bags full of lunch. Both very needed! Photos: Robert Hall
Last week SV collected some grey everlasting (Ozothamnus oncordatus) from around the St Arnaud area. It may have been warm & may have had to put lots of bugs back that found their way into buckets and hands, but we came away with a great amount of seed. In buckets & on clothes!

RIP Joe Flaherty. He was very funny in a ton of stuff but he was also cut out of Freddy Got Fingered, with almost no proof of him ever being in it except for one brief funny fourth wall moment at the very end of the theatrical trailer. He's not even in the DVD's deleted scenes.

A great article! I’m privileged enough to have spent over a year in the field in total and it has been absolutely foundational to my development as a scientist. Covid has slowed that down for me and I assume many. But I’m keen to get back out there and to teach natural history!
