🏔️The Eternity Glaciers in Papua survive as high-altitude tropical regions cause snowfall. Yet shifting rainfall patterns due to El Nino threaten their existence. Are you a #glaciologist needing data from these glaciers? Email [email protected] to get involved in our new project
🧊Are phytoplankton blooms the key to limiting ice melting? Abundant within polynyas in Antarctic Seas, the blooms act to reflect sunlight, keeping deeper waters cooler and reducing ice shelf melt by 7% compared to clearer waters elsewhere. Read more: doi.org/10.1029/2024JC…
New climate simulations predict that by 2100, Arctic coastal permafrost erosion will increase by 2-3x. This will reduce its carbon sink by 7-14% and reintroduce CO2 into the atmosphere, having a significant detrimental impact on our climate. Read more: doi.org/10.1038/s41558…
🌱Scientists at @SwanseaUni working with @ProjectSeagrass, @wwf_uk, Sky Rescue Ocean and @carlsberg have established the first #seagrass nursery in Wales as well as planting 2 hectares of meadows, that's over 750,000 seagrass seeds supporting our national #carbonsinks !
💧'Room for the River' is a Netherlands #climate adaptation strategy. It allows rivers more space to flood safely by lowering floodplains, relocating dikes and creating water storage areas. It includes 34 projects across the country, making landscapes more resilient to flooding.
Until 1986, Costa Rica suffered one of the world’s worst deforestation rates, with forest cover falling 24%. Today, forests occupy approximately 57%, with the Tree Nursery Program giving access to free seedlings which are then planted in deforested or degraded areas.
💨 The Faroe Islands @Tinganes are aiming for 100% green energy by 2030. Adding more wind turbines has taken sustainable production of electricity from 40-67%, with the aim to electrify heating in the Faroes and double the amount of electric cars on the roads by the end of 2025!
🌾 The LIFE MIDMACC Project is addressing climate challenges in Spain's mid-mountainous regions. Strategies include more vineyards to improve soil health, introducing more livestock grazing to prevent fires and restoring pastures by clearing scrubland. life-midmacc.eu
💡 How can magic dust lead the fight against climate change?
🌾The dust, otherwise known as basaltic dust, reacts with rainwater to sequester carbon from the atmosphere, aiming to remove millions of tonnes of CO2 from the atmosphere while boosting agricultural productivity.
🗣 We are excited to announce that we have partnered with @WickedWeather1 , a UK-based charity raising awareness about climate change to school children.
❕They are looking for more polar scientists to give talks or workshops, so email [email protected] to sign up!

📢In new research led by Dr Emma Cavan from @imperialcollege in @Nature , it was found that krill lock at least 20 million tonnes of carbon into the
deep ocean annually, equating to $4-46 billion of storage value. That's similar to seagrass or mangroves! dx.doi.org/10.1038/s41467…
📢Opportunity Alert! 📢
We seek glaciologists to join an expedition for a week in Oct 2024 with #TheLastRide to Puncak Jaya, Indonesia, one of the last equatorial mountains in the world with glaciers. You will conduct your own research. Email [email protected] for more info!
🐬 @uhmanoanews have developed a novel method using drones to assess the age structure of critically endangered #dolphins in Greece. Scientists can quickly detect population changes providing valuable insights for #conservation management. Read more here: doi.org/10.1111/acv.12…

🦐Despite their small size (~2 inches long), new @Nature research by @imperialcollege shows that #krill are responsible for absorbing as much carbon as other, more conventional carbon sinks! 🦐#climate#research

🌊In an interesting study, scientists have artificially pumped cool water from nearby wells into overheated river systems, so cold-loving fish, such as wild Atlantic salmon, can thrive. An example of a passive approach in the face of our changing climate: dx.doi.org/10.1111/gcb.16…
