Complex code can look elegant. Complex UML looks like spaghetti. You can show high-level commented code to someone and the chances are they’ll understand it more than UML.

They actually godoubled down? That's not godood. Write your own engine. It'll make the game feel more unique, and you will have all the control. It's not that difficult. If you can make a game, you can make an engine.
