When government speaks of “stakeholders” in the fight against fraud & corruption, they tend to omit the important role that can be played by the private sector. It’s time the State stopped speaking about Public Private Partnerships and actually initiate this important partnership
The Anti Corruption Task Team was formed by government in 2010 along the lines of a stakeholder partnership (see gov.za/AntiCorruption…). What’s not mentioned in the attached link is that the SIU made use of private investigators, auditors and lawyers to help capacitate ACTT.
The NPA engages attorneys and advocates in private practice when the need arises. It is imperative that the NPA, through the DPCI and SAPS, engage with private sector investigators who are experts in specific areas such as complex financial, insurance, cyber & transnational crime
It would not be a cop out for SAPS to admit that they need assistance from the private sector. SAPS already engaged with private security in the E2 project to put more boots on the ground. SAPS must now engage with private independent forensic investigators on a similar basis.
1000 experienced SAPS detectives have left in the past five years. The Hawks have less than half the required posts filled. There are not enough financial analysts employed by law enforcement. The State needs to engage with the private sector where there is requisite expertise.

CASE UPDATE: IRS has been reliably informed that the suspect has apprehended in China with the diamonds. The diamonds are reportedly now in secure police custody in China and in the process of being repatriated back to South Africa.
