A beautiful, moving piece by my colleague Marisa J. Fuentes celebrating the life and work of our esteemed & distinguished colleague Deborah Gray White at Rutgers History nj.com/opinion/2022/0…
Stories of archivists’ hostility and their undermining of Black women’s projects still stun. Strategies? Pass as a genealogist says @DainaRameyBerry, befriend a worker says @drCooperOwens. Never believe an archivist who tells you nothing is there. Thank you for this gathering.
I remember well experiencing this. Walking into a very prominent slavery archive, in #NOLA, with my advisor @DainaRameyBerry & the archivist telling her that “they had nothing there on slavery or the enslaved.” She then handed my advisor Walter Johnson’s book for her to read.
