Most of the discussion around the Vikings' selection of Dallas Turner has been (fairly) about the capital the Vikings spent on him, instead of who he is as a player. To answer that, I went to the tape. Find out who he is in my latest for @ZoneCoverageMN: zonecoverage.com/2024/minnesota…

Turner's athleticism shows up when he works to make plays on wide runs to the outside of him.
One area Dallas Turner needs to improve is in his ability to take on double teams in the run game. He wasn't often asked to take on doubles, but when he did he was knocked back considerably by the blockers.
Dallas Turner plays with good leverage, but could get stronger in the run game as he too often gave up ground to opposing offensive linemen, which created opportunities for run lanes.
Dallas Turner's length and technique are a great benefit to him in the run game, where he consistently disengages from opposing offensive linemen to make plays.
Dallas Turner is impressive setting the edge against TEs, and can do it against OTs as well, compressing lanes and forcing cutbacks, or disengaging for tackles.
Dallas Turner can be used as a weapon on stunts, and is a technical and athletic mismatch when rushing inside against guards. He understands the rules of stunts and will play selflessly if he is supposed to free up his teammates.
Dallas Turner has nice upfield burst and a strong bull rush, which in turn helps him on inside moves, where he is quick to cross the face of the OT and it creates frequent wins.
Turner has an impressive getoff and does good work with his hands to enable to him to win around the edge with good, not great bend.
Dallas Turner's strength as a pass rusher is his ability to bull rush tackles and use his length and leverage to drive offensive linemen into the QB's lap.
Dallas Turner's high motor showed up on multiple occasions when watching his tape.
Dallas Turner has very impressive burst and ability to get off the line of scrimmage to impact offenses.
Three plays that showcase Dallas Turner's athleticism. The leg strength to work through a block from behind, the burst upfield to execute a ghost move, and the flexibility to get his arms up and still impact the QB.
This was the TD that one the game for Michigan, and Turner dominates the TE at the point of attack. To me, 17 takes the wrong gap and it leads to Turner possibly looking incorrect on this play, but I think he did what he could.
Turner ends up playing this wrong here, he has a nice swim to win but because he chose to go inside the blocker he's out of position against the wide run.
Clean pass rush win on the club-rip from Turner helps flush McCarthy from the pocket.
Love the force into contact with the OL by Turner and vision to see the RB and disengage for the tackle.
Turner times the snap so well here that he's quickly two yards further upfield than the rest of the DL. Also shows his ability to gain ground.
Turner is a good teammate on this play, really engaging with the LT to help set up the loop by the 0t on the Ram stunt. He then shows off his speed in outrunning the rest of his teammates to chase McCarthy to the sideline (was this completed? lol).

@FriesFootball back in March when I was looking at the top edge guys, I noticed DT was really good at converting speed to power; like he had that as part of his bag. And then I read scouting reports saying he was only a 1 dimensional speed rusher and I was very confused.

@FriesFootball I fully expect him to get plenty of spinner looks w/ Flores deploying him. The Dont'a Hightower comparisons while not 1:1 in frame, make a ton of sense for deployment on the variety of games that Flores likes to use from ram, truck, etc. to get guys like Turner advantageous looks
@FriesFootball Absolutely concur. It's why as good as it is to see a ghost move in his arsenal, it's still rather choppy & he doesn't win nearly as clean as you'd likely come to expect watching the Von Miller's & Brian Burns' of the world. His game is built much more on brawn from my evaluation

Hey @LukeBraunNFL thought one of the questions on your show was kind of funny because 3/4 of the teams that have traded into the top 3 for a QB since 2011 have made the Super Bowl within 3 years. Technically the Eagles and Rams didn't give up 3 firsts, but gave up the equivalent.
