Parentification is an "invisible" form of trauma that is often not recognized in our society. It occurs when parents look to their children to provide emotional support, and to run parts of the household. It's a role reversal.

Change your thoughts or just shift your mindset leaves out the reality that our nervous system (polyvagal) state creates our thoughts. If we’re in chronic stress or survival mode, we lose the ability to ‘just change’ our thoughts— it’s our body creating them.

How do we know if something is a trauma response: One way I find helpful is to ask - are the patterns of reflexive behavior I am using when I feel unsafe a way of coping with real or perceived traumatic experiences that are currently taking place or being re-triggered?

During a fight/flight response, excess energy gets stored in our body that needs to be released. THIS is why trauma-informed therapists suggest shaking the body to help re-regulate the nervous system. Even animals do this, instinctually. OK, @taylorswift13. Let’s shake it!

We all use coping patterns as adults, to protect what happened to us as kids. Notice the need to stay on top of everything at all times. This often represents a hypervigilance to always be on guard. There’s a perceived threat that relaxing brings unexpected trauma and pain.
