I would argue all VMware replacement conversations should start with what applications the business needs to run. The features and ecosystem support the workloads running on the virtualization platform. Do dev and test workloads need data protection or HA?

Speed has been the focus of the homelab hypervisor that I've been working on and being able to go from not installed to ready to run virtual machines in a matter of seconds accomplishes the goal. The OS installation is stateless and I usually run it from a USB on real hardware.

New hardware is in for the homelab and the first test for the custom hypervisor is nested Nutanix AHV for migration testing. Next up are HPE Morpheus VM Essentials and Red Hat OpenShift w/Virtualization.

Adding more capabilities to the homelab hypervisor to automate the creation of virtual machine templates. The hypervisor now natively hosts the kickstart files that are defined during the creation of the instance.

Time to tinker some more with the custom homelab hypervisor that I started a few months back. The more I work with all of the VMware alternatives the more I realize the value of having a homelab solution that is ephemeral and boots in seconds instead of minutes or hours.

I've been tinkering with building a custom Linux distribution for my homelab. The goal is to learn more about the inner workings of Linux but also because I have a very specific use case that I can significantly optimize for. I don't need hundreds of tools and drivers.

There's value in a purpose built virtualization solution just for home labs where the goal is to work on everything above the hypervisor and not the hypervisor itself. Most features aren't needed in this scenario. All you need is just enough to run VMs for testing purposes.

Digging into the machine authentication options for MongoDB, MySQL, and PostgreSQL databases. x.509 appears to be the most viable option in terms of integration with the workload identity solution I've been working on. This means a CA will be needed, so one more moving part.

The Proxmox identity solution I've been working on contains several moving parts but helps deliver a frictionless workload identity solution for on-prem environments. All of the pieces have been around for over a decade but just need to be pulled together to make it easy.
