No system of interventions can make up for teaching students below grade-level in their core instruction. Additional time and support must be provided in addition to—and not in place of—access to new grade-level essential curriculum.

The life-blood of a school’s intervention process should be teacher team created/selected formative assessments. They are short-cycle, aligned to specific team essential standards and should be used by the team to determine what worked in their initial teaching.

Hey principal, are there classrooms in your school with behavior charts hanging, publicly displaying every student’s status? If the answer is yes, remove them. They are detrimental to a school’s culture, and jeopardize psychological safety within individual students.

I don’t know what’s more shocking to me: - School officials who choose to not to feed free meals to hungry kids when they can, - The sheer number of children whose families need government assistance, or -1 in 5 Alabama children don’t know where their next meal is coming from.

It’s not just students who need Maslow. Teachers need: 1) feel safe / supported 2) emotional connection/ relationships 3) feel respected 4) attention/ appreciation 5) value within the team 6) Volition/ autonomy 7) innovation/ creativity 8) self care
