On July 16, 2025, the Taliban detained dozens of young women in Kabul's Shahr-e Naw neighborhood for allegedly being without a male escort, despite their compliance with the dress code. These detentions carry devastating social and psychological consequences. In Afghan culture, such detentions bring severe stigma that can ruin the lives of these young women and their families. Taliban detention facilities are notorious for torture, disappearances, and sexual violence. There have been reports of women and young boys committing suicide after being detained. In some cases, families have killed women who spent time in Taliban prisons in the name of preserving "family honor." These arrests are part of a broader campaign of intimidation and repression. Videos of these arrests circulating on social media have sparked public outrage, with many calling for international intervention against the Taliban's treatment of women. The Taliban's silence on this matter only deepens concerns about the safety and dignity of these detained women. We urgently call on the international community and global justice organizations to take action for Afghanistan's women. The gender apartheid in Afghanistan must be recognized and criminalized as a crime against humanity. The UN and other countries must stop normalizing this tyrannical and gender apartheid regime. #StandWithAfghanWomen #GenderApartheid
