Steven Dick, DhoM of the British Embassy in Budapest was the 10th victim of the COVID-19 in Hungary. I extend my sympathy and heartfelt condolences to his loved ones and colleagues. I mourn a fellow diplomat, who passed away in a foreign land. R.I.P.

Probably the most ornate Belle Époque Café anywhere, the 1894 Café New York, on Budapest’s Nagykörút (Ringstrasse), built in the New York Life Insurance building designed by Alois Hausmann (also the architect of Buda’s Royal Palace 1891-1905).

The siege of Budapest started 75 years ago and ended on 13 February 1945. During the fighting more than 38 k civilians died, among them 17 k of Jewish descent. 3/4 of the buildings were destroyed. Lest we forget when we are blessed to have a peaceful Xmas!
