In 1876 Thomas Smith became one of Indiana's first Black firefighters. Hired with several others as an act to appease the community’s dismay after charges were dropped against the Indy police officers who shot an unarmed Black man earlier that year. indyencyclopedia.org/thomas-smith/

#OTD in 1937, the Transcontinental Roller Derby opened at the Indiana State Fairgrounds Coliseum. Four Hoosiers—Jack and Jayne Cummings of Lafayette, Tom Whitney of Indianapolis, and Gene Vizena of East Gary—numbered among the 30 participants racing the 2,300-mile distance to LA.

On this day in 1917 a clip of military planes was filmed at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The speedway was commandeered by the government for use as a repair depot and landing strip during World War I. This video is part of the WRTV-6 Collection.
