Pub Sign of the Week: The Rigger, Elton. So-named due to its proximity to Stanlow oil refinery. Like so many purpose-built estate pubs it is currently boarded up and forlorn. Central location though. Still potential to be a community hub of the future! #PubSignThursday

Birch Hall Inn, Beck Hole. Been top of my CAMRA Heritage pub bucket list for such a long time but finally conquered and didn't disappoint. A timeless, rural gem with adjacent sweet shop hidden deep down in the Murk Esk Valley of the North Yorkshire Moors.
Pub Sign of the Week: The Princes, Ellesmere Port. A strange interpretation of the disappearance of the Princes in the Tower. It appears they're about to be abducted by the Creature from the Black Lagoon disguised in robes. Or is it their uncle Richard III? #PubSignThursday
Chequers, Ticknall, Derbyshire A charming CAMRA heritage pub in a pretty village close to Chalke Abbey. Experience has taught me to be very wary of Draught Bass in west Cheshire but I make a bee-line for it in its heartlands. A superb pint.
Pub Sign of the Week: Cat & Fiddle, Wildboarclough, Cheshire. Who remembers this Robinson's tied-house up on the moors between Macclesfield and Buxton? The second highest pub in England, it closed in 2014 but now lives on as a bar for Forest Distillery. #PubSignThursday

One from last Friday. A pre-match pint in the Malt Shovels, Altrincham. Peace and quiet and a read of my Inn Sign Society magazine before the boisterous cricketing mayhem of Lancashire v Yorkshire at Old Trafford. Long time since I last visited this Samuel Smith's house.
Painting of the Week: "Tempests Attacking Flying-bombs" - Thomas Monnington (1944). Taking out a doodlebug over the oast houses of Kent. The cows appear more laid back about matters than that horse. Swirling clouds reminisce of Van Gogh.

Blackley CC v Luddendenfoot CC (Halifax League Div1) - home win. A great setting high above Calderdale close to the M62. A shock defeat for the league leaders who crash to 43 all out. More cask. Vocation Bread & Butter a real favourite of mine.
Barkisland CC v Skelmanthorpe CC (Huddersfield Premier) - away win. A windy setting up in the hills above Ripponden. Halifax & Calderdale CAMRA's Club of the Year 2025 and you could see why. A great range of beers. So many cricket clubs in West Yorkshire have good cask.
Bit of drama on sleepy Percy Road in @ShitChester. Apparently the hapless Lexus clipped a parked vehicle and somehow toppled over along with embarrassed driver and two dogs. Not sure of their wellbeing but happy to report the impressive Hollyhocks close by was unscathed.
Fleeing the pub where it was all kicking off, cops on there way, I heard the begging calls of two well fledged Tawny Owlets. Got my bike light on one of them but impossible to photo. Lots of head bobbing.
Right place. Right time. Two for the price of one at Marford Quarry on Wednesday late afternoon. Silver-washed Fritillary plus White-letter Hairstreak at peace with one another. @savebutterflies
