For people comparing that #BarbieMovie is “anti-men” there is a whole second storyline and song surrounding co-lead Ryan Gosling about how Ken doesn’t feel good enough and lacks an identity and purpose. It’s a universal tale on the ridiculous expectations set for humanity.
@JillianChili Ken understanding he's not being treated with dignity and stumbling into the concept of "patriarchy" trying to find help. 😭 Can't believe twitter's hot take was "anti-man" and not "society is terrible to boys too; it's why boys fall into harmful 'alpha male' self help spheres."
@JillianChili I honestly think that's why a lot of radical conservative Beckys and Kevins are afraid of #BarbieTheMovie: this movie lets women be feminine without so much sexist and misogynistic stigma and also lets men be vulnerable and goofy without sexist and patriarchal dudebro toxicity.
@JillianChili I loved the movie and actually thought Ken stole the show.
@JillianChili like it literally shows how the patriarchy is not a beneficial system and it helps no one
@JillianChili The scene, where he realizes he cannot comprehend his own masculinity outside the context of dominating women, and gets a minor panic attack is something that actually happened to me when I was 19. The film is empathetic towards every man who accepts the existence of the problem.
@JillianChili It's also about how the patriarchy harms all of us, not just women.
@JillianChili People who think it’s anti-men also probably think patriarchy is about horses.
@JillianChili Yes! I feel like a lot of guys are missing this! Ken isn't validated by barbie so he tries out the patriarchy realizes that doesn't do anything for him either, then realizes that to be happy he has to be his own person! I love it!
@JillianChili Exactly. #Ken has an identity crisis;. I think it has been beautifully depicted. #Barbie is a film for all humans of all genders and political affiliations.
@JillianChili Just by that description, I think a lot of men (like me) will find solace in Ken as a character (I'm seeing it tomorrow, no worries) bc that's a completely relatable trait
@JillianChili It was great, greta did justice to both. I could understand both sides, and I felt for both sides. Some people are just angry cus they wanna be
@JillianChili this!! the whole point of ken’s storyline is to show that societal systems push young boys into mentalities like toxic masculinity as a bit of a coping mechanism, giving them a sense of power. the unspoken expectations take a toll on everyone
@JillianChili The whole Ken story proves perfectly how society also messes up men. He doesn't need all of these materialistic things to feel validated. He's okay just for being who he is. That's why he... He's just Ken.
@JillianChili For a complete breakdown of this dynamic filmcolossus.com/movie-explanat…
@JillianChili Ken even says he flattened himself to cosplay patriarchy - he just wanted the horses!
@JillianChili @edgorteg I don’t love how some of the ideas were executed, but there’s definitely something to how pushing the men down so aggressively is what drove them to their toxic behaviors. Boxes like “the dumb male” or “the perfect woman” or “the subservient woman” are the issue.
@JillianChili Tbh Ken’s story >> Barbie’s in my opinion Ken managed to balance the two tones of this film in his character perfectly. Barbie…Barbie broke the funny theme too much and sometimes it felt like being watching a completely different film
@JillianChili Greta and hubby should never write another movie again, the storyline is so shallow, flips like a TikTok, and the jokes don't even hit home
@JillianChili The movie is obviously very pro woman but I don’t think anti men. I think its anti box, anit having to fit in a specific mold.
@JillianChili I want the Barbie aisle to be 60’s powder blue and pink, and for Ken dolls to be in their own section in that aisle where I can take any ONE of my second cousins and help them pick out their first doll, Barbie or Ken, or both. That’s what I wanted as a kid. I wanted to play too..
@JillianChili Dont worry guys ken is gonna go beach everyone off😭😭😭
@JillianChili No bc literally his whole point in the movie is that he just wanted to be respected and seen because she refused to acknowledge him and you'd think the men watching this would idk root for that?? Bc that's literally what they're complaining about while complaining about the movie
@JillianChili What's funny is how realistic this portrayal of a lot of men are. Self serving and only proving their worth when other men are involved.
@JillianChili Ken stays in Barbieland. Barbie leaves to become human. Both knew what was in RealWorld and yet Ken decided to stay in fantasyland. Doesn’t say much about Ken does it?
@JillianChili They literally flipped the script like what is so hard to grasp 💀💀
@JillianChili It had great commentary on both genders.. boys/girls night every night thing was shattering equally for Barbie.. & Ken
@JillianChili Who cares if it IS anti-men? You know how many anti-women films were made over the years? EVERY SINGLE MOVIE before the 50s had the women as accessories. Ken's awesome because he's a cool accessory.
@JillianChili no it's 3rd wave wokeism supporting agendas to dismantle patriarchal constructs under the guise of female empowerment.
@JillianChili He’s literally given a voice IN THE BARBIE WORLD
@JillianChili If you ask me, the movie focussed entirely TOO MUCH on how the male lead felt whilst completely sidelining the title character
@JillianChili They're not mad that it's anti-men. They're mad that it's anti-men like them.
@JillianChili Wasn’t kens whole arc about finding validation and acceptance of himself. Not I’m Barbie or the patriarchy books and shit he read in the real world. To know he’s worth something as himself
@JillianChili Talk about missing the point of the movie. The script is working on a higher level than most man babies can handle.
@JillianChili As a man. I saw it, I loved it. I didn't see it as anti men at all. If you can watch that movie and think men don't do some of the stuff that was in it then you're just not very self aware and not very open minded.
@JillianChili Also how his identity isn’t based around his material things nor by the girl he dates, he is not his car, not his house, not Barbie’s bf, he’s just Ken
