Our city continues to mourn the death of Const. Northrup. It is almost impossible to imagine a circumstance in which an accused in a case of first-degree murder would be granted bail.
The fact we don't know the reasons why the presiding judge made such an extraordinary decision thanks to a publication ban is very troubling, it is wrong, and represents one more argument supporting my longstanding call for bail reform.
@JohnTory You too? Seriously? A lot of criminal lawyers would be happy to give you a lesson about the presumption of innocence, bail hearings, and publication bans.
@JohnTory Because every single Canadian citizen is entitled to the presumption of innocence and release on a reasonable bail is a right. You don’t know the circumstances of what happened and it will eventually play out during a trial. Which is also the right of every Canadian citizen.
@JohnTory The cops did not do their job well ops didn’t do their job well, the judge sniffed that out
@JohnTory Really Mr. Mayor. I can improve your imagination greatly having done Murder bails for 36 years. Give me a call. If you have your law licence still you are invited on me to the next Criminal Lawyers’ Association conference at the Sheraton. It’s CPD. @ClaOntario
@JohnTory John Tory: ‘It’s outrageous that our judicial system is predicated on the idea that you’re innocent until proven guilty!’
@JohnTory Then your imagination is sorely lacking. It's inappropriate for an elected official to second-guess a judge in the absence of all the information, in the midst of a case. Take a step back and get in your lane.
