Most people seem to think that reform or regulation of social media means content moderation, which often leads to censorship. No. @RaviDataIyer at @PsychofTech notes how little moderation can do, and how much can be done to improve architecture: psychoftech.substack.com/p/addressing-a…?
@JonHaidt I wouldn’t mind seeing you on Twitter’s content moderation board. You’re level headed and fair.
@JonHaidt @RaviDataIyer @PsychofTech The notion that censorship can only be achieved by content moderation, and cannot be achieved through structural (“architecture”) fiat, is incredibly naïve.
@JonHaidt @RaviDataIyer @PsychofTech Editing amplification is just a more dishonest form of moderation.
@JonHaidt @RaviDataIyer @PsychofTech From a practical perspective, yes. Perhaps not from a principled perspective? Meanwhile, social media is a reflection of the Pareto principle. So inevitably the 20% drive the content while the 80% stay quiet. The bulk of the moderation occurs preemptively, tacitly. In a sense.
@JonHaidt @RaviDataIyer @PsychofTech I agree with the headline, but I don't think it's fair to frame the issue as "most people think..." when the reality is that people are explicitly objecting to content moderation while also explicitly calling for reform.
@JonHaidt @RaviDataIyer @PsychofTech Excellent! Compelled to add: 1) disagree: “AI is becoming more interactive and humanlike.” 2) online discourse should be a part of the conversation, not the reality that people live in. 3) regulation will never happen from any govt but ppl themselves. 4) tech literacy is key!
@JonHaidt @RaviDataIyer @PsychofTech This seems to be at the core of what Twitter’s approach aspires to.
@JonHaidt @RaviDataIyer @PsychofTech Absolutely. Moderation must be about slowing down rates of transmission. Written about it a few times. psybertron.org/?s=Moderation+
@JonHaidt @RaviDataIyer @PsychofTech a clear argument. I would add to this that setting clear healthy values on a platform and allowing users to climb the "value-ladder" will create a very different experience and implicitly moderate content. The value in Twitter is "get attention" and the reward is nr of followers
@JonHaidt @RaviDataIyer @PsychofTech At some point moderation equates to editing. At that point, what are debatably platforms become publishers and liable for all content. I’m not sure that amplification algorithms ahnte that: how different is this from a newspaper putting an article on the front page or back page?
@JonHaidt @RaviDataIyer @PsychofTech Tomaytoe, tomahtoe. 🍅 🍅
@JonHaidt @RaviDataIyer @PsychofTech You can bring back balance by not shadow removing content. washingtonpost.com/technology/202…
