Confronting bias, prejudice or bullying has obvious costs and hidden benefits; silence has hidden costs and obvious benefits. The more aware you are of both the obvious costs and the hidden benefits, the better your decision about how or if to respond.

If you want to succeed, you have to disrupt bias, prejudice and bullying before they disrupt your team's ability to collaborate.

Part of what makes it hard to respond when someone says something offensive is the uncertainty about where the person is coming from. Is this unconscious bias talking? Or did they mean what they said? Or was it something more insidious?

We often conflate bias, prejudice and bullying, which makes workplace injustice feel like an intractable, monolithic problem. When we break the problem down into its component parts, we can begin to make progress towards solving it.
