This is our "dry" streambed after days of steady rain. It is 6 feet deep, filled with drain rock, with a gradual incline to allow water to flow across the land. Flanked by raised beds, it meanders through the garden. We have another such ditch at a slightly higher elevation.

Thinking about what to plant in spring? How about sunflowers (Helianthus anuus and other species)? They provide nectar and pollen for native bees as well as honey bees. Not to mention how much birds love the seeds!!!

Our 'Desert King' fig has become a garden thug. Planted 4 years ago from a pencil-sized start, it grows about 10 feet a year. It tries to kill our coral bark maple. Time to cut it back. (USDA zone 8).

This fierce beauty, a Cooper's hawk (Accipiter cooperii), a welcome visitor to our garden, looks for smaller birds or mammals to snack on. Gardens provide much needed food and shelter for many creatures from the wild.

The Douglas iris (Iris douglasiana) grows in handsome evergreen clumps to two feet wide and one foot tall. Native to coastal California and southern Oregon it's hardy in USDA zones 7 through 11.

A beautiful iridescent green little sweat bee (Agapostemon sp.) Gathers pollen and nectar from a fleabane (Erigeron) flower. These tiny native bees are important pollinators and are welcome wildlife visitors in our garden.
