Most landlords and tenants rarely have disputes. For the small minority who do – we’re taking action. Today, I tabled legislation that will protect tenants from unfair evictions, promote better compliance, and improve British Columbia's rental system for everyone. 🧵[1/6]
This Bill restricts rent increases when a tenant adds a child under 19 to their household - even if the tenancy agreement states rent will increase with new occupants. Nobody should have their rent increased just because they had a baby - this will put an end to that. 🧵[2/6]
Owning property in British Columbia currently presents significant challenges due to recent policies implemented by the BC NDP Government, which appear to heavily favor tenants at the expense of property owners. These measures have created a situation where owners, despite being responsible for mortgage payments, property taxes, income taxes, and maintenance costs, can find themselves at a disadvantage, especially in scenarios where tenants fail to pay rent. The current legislative environment could be perceived as treating property owners unfairly, leading some to consider selling their properties and leaving BC due to the perceived imbalance in rights and protections between tenants and property owners.
@KahlonRav @Dave_Eby When I was 28 we had a basement suite. We had a lady stop paying her rent. I evicted her. It took 105 days to get to a hearing where she was evicted with 14 days warning. She paid 0 rent for 120 days and I had to pay her deposit back. We didn't rent the suite out again.
@KahlonRav @Dave_Eby $500 damage deposit. Guy left yesterday, with no notice. There are 6 giant bags of garbage plus rotting food on the floor. 0 recourse to the tenant. But of course the land lord is the problem.
@KahlonRav @Dave_Eby You just made it a lot harder for a young couple to secure an apartment.
