This morning, I updated the BC Building Code with #MassTimber changes - effective immediately - that will: ✅Allow for 18 stories. ✅Allow for 9 stories without drywall. ✅Allow for different building structures - like schools and libraries. 🧵[1/5]
✅ Effective now, we're allowing for for taller #MassTimber buildings in British Columbia. Encapsulated mass timber construction buildings can now be 18 stories for residential and office buildings - up from the previous 12-storey limit. 🏗️ 🧵[2/5]
✅ Effective now, we're allowing for different types of #MassTimber buildings. The types of encapsulated mass timber construction buildings allowed are now expanded to include - schools, libraries, retail, some industrial occupancies, and care facilities. 🏫 🧵[3/5]
✅ Effective now, we're allowing for more #MassTimber exposure. Based on height and use - more exposed mass timber is allowed. For residential buildings up to 8-storeys we’ve removed the requirement to encapsulate so more of the wood's beauty can be displayed. 🪵 🧵[4/5]
These changes will build on previous work to transform #MassTimber from a niche product to mainstream. BC leads the way today, but we know Canada is right behind us. We expect other provinces to also adopt these changes in short order. 🍁 👉🏾 news.gov.bc.ca/30656 🧵[5/5]
