@hannahposts @kathbarbadoro I had a college roommate that had chicken pox as a kid and ended up with shingles in college. 28 rn so we were right on the cusp. It’s wild that the vax was around in other countries FOR YEARS before it hit the US in the 90s.

I’m 23 and have never had chicken pox, even when both my sisters did and it didn’t look fun at all 😅

If you get the chickenpox when older it's now more dangerous and you're still just as likely to develop shingles anyway.

The options were getting it as a kid when it's comparatively less risky or getting it at an older age when it's far more likely to cause encephalitis/pneumonia. Not getting it wasn't an option because it was ubiquitous and absurdly contagious.

Obviously pox parties are stupid now when there's a much easier and safer alternative, I was just pointing out that pox parties generally weren't considered "super dangerous" local folk medicine in the 70s/80s when they were actually popular.
@rpaulsenphoto @armahillo @kathbarbadoro @AnaMardoll Pox parties made sense before vaccination though, as the risk of fatality from chickenpox was ~25x higher in adults than in children. Given that the incidence was ~95+%, it was all but inevitable that you'd contract it, so it made sense to do it at an age when it was less risky.
@kathbarbadoro @AnaMardoll I don't think comparing it to chickenpox is a smart take. You *wanted* your kids to get chickenpox as a kid (pre-vax) because it was both lifetime immunity and more or less harmless. We don't want "covid parties" to become a thing in lieu of vaccinations.
