I wrote about hanging out at a museum of artifacts looted from Congo with my friend Mansoor, the way the colonial theft of culture relates to the taking of men to Guantánamo… and also things you don’t want to know about cheese.

"Montenegro isn’t an example of state capture by organised crime. Rather, the cartels are an extension of the state. They are in contact with the state, they are shielded by it and they enrich the people who run it." A fascinating read on how Montenegro became a mafia state.
Since 2015, a violent conflict has erupted between Montenegro’s two main gangs, the Kavači and the Škaljari. In the wake of new evidence suggesting the involvement of high-up Montenegrin judiciary, police and politicians, @alexander_clapp investigates. lrb.co.uk/the-paper/v46/…

@LRB So sorry to hear this news of Helen Vendler’s passing. Years ago, I applied for a fellowship to attend a summer poetry workshop she taught at Harvard. Even though I wasn’t selected, her book on Sonnets taught me so much of what I now teach my students about sonnets.
