We easily underestimate the changes in self perceived identity aphasia. It’s not just the loss of the words and associated frustration, it’s what that represents. The vulnerability of reduced agency, the perceived lack of control and dependence on others to advocate for you.

10. And finally, I am so grateful to feel like I’m ‘living’ again, instead of surviving. This month has obviously been difficult but I feel confident it is a one-off, bad luck situation and I plan to continue living life to the full as much as possible because it is so beautiful!
9. I actually can’t believe this has made it into the list of things I’m grateful for because I struggled to accept it for so long. But 6 months post bladder removal, I feel very thankful for my urostomy. I realise it saved my life and has given a much better quality of life! 10/
3. One of the things that makes the NHS so special is the staff. This is an old photo but this HCA is AMAZING. She’s been there for me constantly over the last 5 years; she’s been to the shop for me; plaited my hair; cheered me up with stories and has just been so loving ♥️ 4/
4. Another old photo but I’m so grateful for nurses. During the last admission, the nurses let me join in on their Friday night takeaway after a really traumatic day. And one of the sisters sat and listened to me cry, without judgement, despite being snowed under 💕5/
5. I’m so grateful to doctors as well. They are very intelligent + hard working but I really like the ones who see you as more than just a patient I’m terrified of theatres now, so when they removed my hickman, the doctor played ABBA to calm me down + I thought that was kind 6/
6. My family and friends are my absolute rocks. They have been unbelievably supportive through all the highs and lows this year. I got this beautiful (real!) Christmas tree off 2 of my best friends to brighten my hospital room, which made me smile every time I saw it 7/
7. I don’t know where to start saying how grateful I am to have Simba in my life. He FaceTimed me while I was in hospital and he looked just like Puss In Boots 🙈 It’s always so special knowing I get to cuddle my ginger kitten when I get discharged 8/

Key points: More research is needed for both EMST and Biozoon in stroke before it is recommended for use, particularly safety aspects! EMST in stroke has many contraindications. Need more research for TMS too but current studies show it is safe. #UKSF23 @JB_SLT @echepperslt

Improving communication for stroke survivors matters. Communication gains were associated with reduced reports of problems with mobility, self-care, and participation in usual activities. Speech pathology support and communication enhanced environments are part of the solution.
