This problem would be very amenable to a self-supervised approach like CLAM (clam.mahmoodlab.org). This process takes as input whole slide images and quantitative outcomes (e.g. malignant vs benign), "learns" to tell the difference, and shows you why it thinks that #CytoChat
I think one of the biggest problems with automating these tasks is the widely variable quality of IHC. In a fully digital ecosystem, one could envision automatic quality checks and perhaps even stain adjustment through style transfer techniques like GAN's #CytoChat
I can't tell you how many consults I get with estimates that turn out to be way off #CytoChat

@Joshua_JLi @LVaickus @SatturwarSwati Even with the relatively simple task of scoring ER PR and Ki67, there is still a lot of issue with the staining and colour profile of scanners. Esp for Ki, how faint to accept as a positive cell (not noise) will be tricky and quite surely lab dependent. #CytoChat

@Sara_Jiang #cytochat I also love smears but now I am talking with respect to digital cytology only!
@SatturwarSwati I think in the context of issues with thick smears, etc. it’s easier to just scan the cell block-and certainly if the goal is to automate interpreting IHCs that’s perfect. But for AI applications in cytology more broadly we can’t ignore smears, LBP! #CytoChat
@Sara_Jiang @SatturwarSwati agree...but again, I think most of our smears will do fine with a good scanner, even without Z-stack #cytochat
@CancerCytopath I'd say we need to rethink our scoring systems for the digipath age. Human usable scoring algorithms are designed to be just that. Digital systems don't care how many parameters are included, they are indefatigable! #CytoChat
