Are deaf communities linguistic minorities or people with a disability? In a great presentation at yesterday’s @BDA_Deaf conference @WFDeaf_org President Joseph Murray’s answer was ‘yes’. Both are true.

Best articles on sign language medical interpreting?
Language deprivation is still not accepted by many/most practitioners in deaf education and teacher education. It was a key point of contention for the expert witness for the school district in the Carter Churchill case.

Deaf education and early intervention are the only fields of science that still view signed languages as “controversial” for healthy human development. Linguistics, brain imaging, psychology, and more eagerly research it to expand our understanding of what it means to be human.

Is International Sign (IS) purer than national sign languages? There's a perspective suggesting that because IS stands as a more 'pure' form of signing as it avoids mouthings and fingerspellings from spoken languages. 🧵
Appreciative of all of the people I shared space with at #AERA2024. I learn more about who I am when in relation to others. #RelationslEpistemology

It's almost as if 40+ years of oppressing sign languages in early intervention and education for deaf children and youth has resulted in a shortage of proficient signers with teacher qualifications.

How to have conversations about deaf gene therapy and editing? Three main points: Must have deaf people in the room; acknowledge our differences. Must acknowledge it’s enormously painful to be asked to justify why you and others like you deserve to continue to exist. #ehdi2024
My face the moment I realize two signing hearing folks decided to use spoken English for their presentation on teaching literacy skills to signing deaf students.
Sign language AI is dominated by hearing, non-signing researchers. What kinds of systemic biases does this introduce in the field's collective direction? To find out, read our preprint, with @aashaka_desai @mdemeulder @jahochcam and Annemarie Kocab! arxiv.org/abs/2403.02563
Working from home means I sign up for all conference opportunities so that I can see people and nerd out on research. I need to get outside of my head!
This is completely bananas. The ACLU of Delaware seems to be back to their anti-ASL campaign. This is after issuing a hollow apology that did not even attempt to rectify the harm they have already caused. Cool.

This episode goes deep into what it means to be deaf through the perspectives of deaf folks. I thoroughly enjoyed it! It captured the essence of the deaf community very well. *highly recommend* for everyone to watch. youtu.be/nythXwJY61Y?si…

Would like to have a better feeling of deaf perspectives. You can just answer yes / no to each question #1 Do you prefer for interpreters to use signed language whenever they are around you (e.g. preparing for the session / hanging around)? #2 Have you ever told them this?
Come and work with us!...
Last day of #ACEDHH2024. Where did the time go? I am not ready for this conference to end. 🥺

I'm only slightly exaggerating when I say that it feels like in the past week I've gotten about 20 manuscript review requests. Just in time for the month that I do not get paid for. 🙃
Only 17% of #Deaf adults have a bachelors degree. This isn’t because Deaf people aren’t good students, or they don’t belong in academia- it’s because colleges and universities actively block the success of Deaf and disabled students in academia. It’s about inaccessibility 1/?
