Lengthy slogans might be protected by copyright; it's misleading to claim they never can be. And logos might be protected under copyright as artistic works as well as potentially being protected by trademarks.

In our risk assessment section, we discussed a scenario of putting up historic theses, and separating the process of digitization by era (pre- and post-1977) to best manage copyright--this helped to focus and make plans to alleviate risk aversion #librarycopyrightinstitute

In relations to library public service, we discussed issues of using makerspaces, using Netflix in a course, and ILL for course reserves, and how these issues fall under copyright #librarycopyrightinstitute

Putting 2 chapters on your course website or on course reserve, whether it's from your own institution or from an ILL request, can conceivably be fair use. If you get any answer of intended use besides individual course study, you can't claim 108. #librarycopyrightinstitute

When making a copyright risk assessment, maybe all you really need for a repository is put up the abstract and then include a link/instructions for how to get the full text. Find out and set expectations to determine what is needed. #librarycopyrightinstitute

Even if you've evaluated you're safe on copyright, there are other factors to think about: Alumni relations, embarrassment, privacy... These are important when assessing risk. #librarycopyrightinstitute

When assessing copyright risk, orphan works are when you can't figure out the rightsholder or the copyright status (such as term expiration). Just because you can't get in touch with a known owner (J.K. Rowling?) doesn't mean you can claim it as orphan. #librarycopyrightinstitute

There is library value in choosing to digitize content that is at high risk of being stolen, is fragile, or is useful for teaching. Knowing the why for digitizing content helps explore copyright exceptions and determine what access may be good enough #librarycopyrightinstitute
