The neoclassical economic model claims we are mostly selfishness. Exchanges this model can't explain are called irrational or biased. Instead, why not admit our models are incomplete since they ignore relationships-- social capital.

We create attachment values by associating an object with a person. Creating attachment values changes an object's meaning and value. Wrapping presents may create attachment value. Attachment value goods may include wedding rings, family photos, favorite songs and hometowns.

Sympathy is a feeling of pity or a sense of the condition of another person or group. Empathy is the capacity to understand or feel what another person is experiencing from within their frame of reference. It is the capacity to “walk in another person’s shoes.”

Relationship, the focus of important social capital definitions, are defined as a condition in which two or more persons are connected. Sympathy and empathy are important relationship connectors because they enable us to internalize the emotions and well-being of others.
