Today I toured the W16th schools zone with the newly formed West 16th Ave Schools Safety Coalition. This road, which runs adjacent to Byng Secondary, is where a 15yo student was recently struck by a driver. There isn’t even a marked crosswalk. #SafeRoutesToSchool
The West 16th Ave Schools Safety Coalition has been formed by parents of Lord Byng Secondary, Queen Elizabeth Elementary and Ecole Jules Quesnel - around 2500 kids forced to run the gauntlet of speeding drivers. Traffic calming infrastructure is urgently needed.
@Lucyincanada @BosqueUbc @16thavesafety Regular driver on 16th here, not a parent of a current student. Vancity seems to expect people to cross on the light at Crown. However, Wallace is much more convenient. It's a long way to Crown. They need to put a painted crosswalk and flashing light where people actually walk.
@Lucyincanada @16thavesafety Maybe councillor @BrianVMontague will volunteer to be a crossing guard?
@Lucyincanada @16thavesafety there is however a traffic light crossing about 1/2 block west of the school
@Lucyincanada @16thavesafety the cars quite often speed up when i attempt to cross via my lowly bicycle.
@Lucyincanada @16thavesafety It's one of those litmus tests of class segregation in our society: how much is city hall incentivized to care about pedestrian safety school grounds — private vs. public.
