This was the birth of the scientific process.

People started asking questions such as “What's the basic stuff that the universe is made of?” – and NOT to the gods but TO NATURE ITSELF.

It was a part of a “scientific awakening” of the human mind against the tyranny of the priests.

Mathematics, in the modern sense, began with Thales around 600 BC as part of an attempt to understand the world in a non-magical way.

In the math process both brain-halves work together to construct combinations of mental fantasies that are tested for logical consistency.

To practice the art of mathematics is to be involved in a mental process which has surprisingly strong connections with physical reality.

Mathematics = Hom(Universe, Mind) = the set of HOMOMORPHISMS (structure-preserving mappings) from the Universe to the Mind.

Mathematics is the study of the totality of structures that the human mind is able to perceive.

Yet, during the early parts of math education, mathematics is presented mostly in terms of calculations - with increasingly fatal results.

A MATHEMATICIAN can be defined as a person who thinks for a day in order to avoid computing for an hour.

Math is about REPRESENTATION. The stronger the representation, the fewer the computations. This is an example of MATHEMATICAL ELEGANCE.

Math is not about computations. In fact, it's about AVOIDING COMPUTATIONS as much as possible, while still arriving at quantitative results.

Math can never be taught. It can only be given opportunities to grow, as it feeds on a sense of structure which is hard-wired in our brains.
