#JASCchat#ASCejournalchat@DoktoraMalvar an excellent analogy. I think standardization can serve to create a minimum list ( or merely be food for thought), that people can freely add on to.
#JASCchat#ASCejournalchat@VandaTorousMD I couldn't agree more about nocardia! In our patient population it has been rare (subjective), and false positives from other filamentous appearing bacteria complicate things. If morphologically consistent, I would call it in!
#JASCchat#ASCejournalchat@KatyRezaei An excellent point! I agree that each institution will have to make their own decision on a list based on their patient population and clinical practice patterns. I think having a basic list hopefully will streamline it as a starting point
#JASCchat#ASCejournalchat@VandaTorousMD Hi Dr. Torous. Excellent question! We don't treat those as critical values. At least in my experience they often end up being not clinically significant. Would love to hear what they do at your institution!
#JASCchat#ASCejournalchat A2; for example it's easy for note about schistosomiasis eggs to be easily lost in the background of a negative (for high grade urothelial carcinoma) urine for hematuria, so emailing the urologist would help to make sure they're not overlooked

A2 A good way to think of significant/unexpected diagnoses. Is where you have to have some form of back and forth communication with the ordering provider to ensure they see the abnormality and are poised to act on it
