Everyone who uses VIM uses a different subset of it. It's common to watch another Vim user do something and be like, "how did you do that!?!?" It's in their muscle memory, not their conscious memory: they need to repeat it and watch which keys they hit.

Another good reminder: No one has 100 crappy versions of anything. They either have 10 crappy versions and quit, or they stick with it long enough to get it figured out.
