In general, birth as a human depends upon having previously practiced pure moral discipline and giving. Specifically, each aspect of a fully endowed human life has its own appropriate cause.
Why is our present state of existence considered to be so rare and so difficult to attain? The reason is that we were not born human by chance. Every effect has a cause, and our present existence as human beings is the result of a number of specific and hard-to-create causes.
In contrast to the overwhelming majority of beings in the universe, including most of our fellow humans, we have the opportunity to do something truly meaningful with our lives.
Buddha is a fully awakened being, Dharma is the spiritual teachings such a being gives others to lead them from suffering and dissatisfaction to temporary and ultimate happiness, while the Sangha is the community of those following these enlightening teachings.
We should know that in this impure world there is no real happiness at all. The happiness that comes from worldly enjoyments is not real happiness but only a reduction of our previous problems.

Whereas cherishing ourself is the cause of all suffering, cherishing others is the source of all good qualities.
We all want happiness, and happiness comes from virtuous actions. If we cherish others we will naturally practice virtue, so cherishing others fulfills all our wishes. It was for this reason that Geshe Langri Tangpa referred to cherishing others as a ‘wishfulfilling jewel’.
If we cherish others, naturally we will perform virtuous actions such as giving, moral discipline, and patience; and as a result we will experience great happiness in the future.
Even if we do not attain Buddhahood in this life, wherever we are reborn in samsara we will reap the benefits of practicing patience.
In these degenerate times, when the causes of suffering abound and it is rare for even a day to pass without our experiencing physical or mental problems, the practice of patience is of supreme importance.
Buddha taught that everything depends upon the mind. To realize this, we must first understand the nature and functions of the mind.
If we train in purifying and controlling our mind through the sincere practice of Buddhadharma, we can ensure that our mind remains calm and happy all the time. Then, no matter how difficult our external circumstances may be, we will always be happy and peaceful.
We never experience pure, lasting happiness. In his Dharma teachings, Buddha advises us not to seek happiness outside ourself but to establish it within our mind.
