٤.اما وقتی کسی در خاورمیانه برای باورش کشته می‌شود — حتی اگر ما با آن باور مخالف باشیم — او را تروریست، افراطی یا تهدید جهانی می‌نامند. آیا واقعاً داریم «عمل» را قضاوت می‌کنیم؟ یا صرفاً «طرفِ سیاسی» را؟

٣.این روزها که خبر کشته شدن دانشمندان یا فرماندهان ایرانی را می‌شنوم — بعضی از آن‌ها از طرف حکومت، برخی از طرف دشمنان — دوباره به آن جمله فکر می‌کنم. در آمریکا، فداکاری سربازانی که برای هدفشان جنگیدند (هرچند آن هدف بحث‌برانگیز بوده) به‌عنوان شجاعت و افتخار یاد می‌شود.
٢. «بیشتر کسانی که برای مؤتلفه جنگیدند و جان باختند، باور داشتند که از یک اصل دفاع می‌کنند: حقِ زندگی به شیوه‌ای که خود برگزیده‌اند... این وفاداری به باورشان، آنان را به ساختن یادبودی بزرگ وا داشت — یادبودی که تا امروز پابرجاست.» از آن روز، این جمله همیشه در ذهنم مانده.
١. چند سال پیش، در سفرم به ایالت جورجیا، از یادبود استون ماونتین بازدید کردم. روی سنگی نوشته‌ای بود که به سربازان ایالات مؤتلفه (Confederacy) در جنگ داخلی آمریکا تقدیم شده بود:
Brave people can fight for unjust causes. Smart people can defend violence with cold logic. And belief, no matter how passionately held, does not always lead us to truth.
