St. George's Syro Malabar Catholic church in Kochi, Kerala. One of the largest churches built in Asia follows European and Kerala styles of architecture. Commonly known as 'Edappally Pally' (Pally meaning church in Malayalam), the history of this pilgrim shrine goes back to a small church from the 6th century dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The foundation stone for the large church was sanctified by Pope St. John Paul II and laid in 2001. Edapally Church, today situated in an urban center amidst the busy and chaotic highway with malls and metros, once used to be a beautiful village full of paddy fields. This church is witness to the transformation of Kochi and the Church in Kerala.
