As a instrument, segaba has been recorded by the likes Kirby. Dr Mothusi Phuthego did some studies on it as well. None could not pinpoint its exact place of origin.

Botswana is blessed with composers. Ratsie comes top, but the likes of Speech Madimabe and Sheleng are not far off. Remember too that we are only dealing with recorded ones.

Mompati (MHSRIP) Very useful. It has hard to track him, but once we meet he was a great resource. As researchers we are not supposed to be emotional, but his story was touching. He died bitter.

Interesting question. The answer is no. I interviewed Mompati who used to carry Ratsie's segaba as a young boy. He insisted that the final segaba Ratsie played was colleced by the museum. He said he saw it on a trip to the place. Other sources have serious doubts about this!

There were issues of verifying information, which was mostly oral. Also, there were issue with obtaining rights from family members as well as other aspects of doing the project on your own without any support.

Ratsie began singing before Botswana because a nation state. It was way before the country had a modern economy to talk about. But even then, he still found a way to get paid for his music. He was paid in kond as well as with money.
