Chrysoesthia sexguttella, Six-spot crest, 3mm long, emerged today from mines collected from Atriplex mid Sept.23, pupated early Oct. Kept in a dry pot overwinter.
Adela reaumurella (green long-horn) on heathland on the Quantock Hills, Somerset this afternoon. Common Heath moth also seen. @quantockhills @BCSomerset @MothsSomerset
Reviewed progress after 7 moth traps this year and it's been interesting: 40 species of which 10 new here. Night of 11/4 was catch-up time with 4 striking new moths: water carpet, oak beauty, frosted green and a glistening Dyseriocrania subpurpurella. @MothsSomerset @BCSomerset
1/3 Ragwort is a much maligned plant yet it is really important to a whole range of insects who benefit from its nectar and pollen and for other insects it provides food for their early stages. @savebutterflies
A Purple Thorn - such a beautiful moth. I don't see it every year so so it's always a treat when it turns up.
A nice surprise the other day given the windy conditions was this Adela cuprella hanging on for dear life on a Goat Willow #mothsmatter @BCSomerset @savebutterflies
@WheatersDave I find a lot of moths in the egg boxes I lean against the trap. I lean a piece/stick of wood or stone against them to keep them in place. Well worth doing.
I know a lot of you use egg trays around the outside of your moth traps. How do you secure them so they don’t blow away?

Dark sword-grass found on re-checking egg trays before storing today. Pleasantly surprised after 7 moths of 3 (Orthosia) species to MV light last night. Other sightings further S and W last night so this may have arrived on the sou'wester from continental Europe. @MothsSomerset
My earliest recorded Iron Prominent - I like the blue iridescence on the underwing - not seen that before.

35 moths of 7 species to MV last night : 3 beautiful Powdered Quaker were stars of the show and new for the garden to boot. Layers needed at sunrise, 5deg C with an (un-Easterly!) east wind. Happy Easter, moth-ers! @MothsSomerset

@WestwingSimon @quantockhills @MothsSomerset They will come down to muddy edges of puddles and can be netted and ID checked against Light Orange Underwing if that occurs in your area. They are v easy to spook though and even a camera shutter sound can be enough for them to be off again
Been scouting for orange underwing moth around birches on the nearby @quantockhills hills last few days. Over 3 visits had each time brief silhouette sightings of unidentified moths in the right places, but still nothing definite. Sunny still days 🤞🏻: other hints? @MothsSomerset
Dark sword grass (NFG) and Engrailed best of 37/14 to MV light overnight Heathfield TA4 VC5. Ag. alstromeriana the only micro. in the garden. Short video of this Coleophora on juncus seeds from marsh field nearby. One empty case in the background. @MothsSomerset
