Today we remember the Catalan - Puerto Rican composer Pau Casals i Defilló (Dec 1876 - Oct 1973). Casals' compositional style ranged from songs for voice and piano or cello, sardanas, chamber music to more large scale pieces.
Apart from being an internationally well-respected cellist, conductor, instructor and founder of various international orchestras, Casals also was an avid advocate for peace. His two interests merged with his composition of the Hymn to the United Nations.
