If you need a smile today… It’s too cold for Hazel and Bubba to run around and play outside today (-20 and lower with windchill) but they missed each other so much that they had a playdate inside. They’re very happy. @dog_rates they’re some good pups!

Phew, ok I think that’s it! Love this album. What’s cool is that I also hear the styles of the co-writers, but JK makes it his own. That’s our job as performers- to take what has been written and make it mean something to us and our audience. And he does that. 13/13

Shot Glass of Tears Heyyy there’s that 1/2 step relationship again. (See my Hate You thread.) it’s on “FEEL again,” etc. When writing sad songs especially, play with that tension and release, especially in that half step. It’s a sure way to make us sad (in a good way) 12/13

You can hear it in the first part of the chorus- it’s panned to the left. Super clean guitar. And then the synth comes in with a countermelody. Again love the octave doubling he’s doing with the vocals. I want to know how many tracks some of these songs are haha 11/13

We’ve got 3 octaves going at one point, with no other harmonies. It leaves an emptiness and yet also a depth to the sound. (And everything else seems to drop out too so it’s realllly empty haha) Too Sad to Dance Love that there’s an electric guitar doubling the melody 10/13

Somebody- they have sooo much compression on his voice at the beginning, I genuinely thought it was someone else haha. But it also again has to do with his literal vocal production and where he’s directing the sound (this sounds very forward.) Also love the octave doubling 9/13

Please Don’t Change Makes me want to dance haha. Also notice the breathiness he adds to the “please don’t change.” There’s that example of color change. (Color change doesn’t always mean breathiness- it often has to do with where you’re putting the sound, how rounded 7/13

Yes or No is just fun. Crisp, clean pop. Very catchy. Also make sure to listen to all of these with headphones if you can. It’s cool to hear how they’ve mixed things- guitar in this song is mixed slightly back and to the right for one section. Let’s appreciate the mix haha 6/13

The other thing he said is they’re sidechaining the bass. This… can be a complicated explanation if you don’t know the terminology, but the end result is that the bass’s volume is temporarily lowered when the kick drum hits, which gives a really crisp sound to the groove. 4/13

I already did a bit of a breakdown on Standing Next To You, but I wanted to give you my dad’s thoughts (bass player and producer.) He said they’re using an envelope affect on the bass at the end. As a side note, he’s hella happy funky bass lines are back in pop lol 3/13

Ok, full initial musical musings by Maddie on #Golden (the new songs) Closer To You -as always, I love what JK is able to do with his voice. In this case, I want to point out how he’s coloring his voice with breathiness on “Closer” (the hook) compared to the other parts 1/13

Then there’s the end with the oos, where our ear is expecting to hear a descending interval because the rest of the resolutions move downward. But suddenly we have a 1/2 rising interval rather than descending. And it’s an inverted minor 4 so you all know that’s my fave. 4/?

So when JK sings Haaate You that 1/2 step is heart wrenching. The other thing to note is we’re moving from a suspension to a resolution musically- so that note on “hate” gives us tension, followed by the release on You. It’s little things like that that make you FEEL hurt 3/?
