Pre pay utility services are becoming very popular in the US. Most programs have very high customer satisfaction rates.

FYI... Utilities all have different restoration standards and approaches.
The "modern" electric grid was named the top engineering marvel of the 20th century.
If the power is out and you have a medical emergency call 911. Don't wait on hold for the utility to tell you that!
FYI... It is important to check back in with your utility regularly to update them on your outage. If u don't tell them they don't know.
If the Smart Grid is going to help it needs to communicate with both utilities and other power users.
What if the area with the most meters out during an outage doesn't have the most ppl?

If the power goes out keep your fridge and freezer closed, the food will stay frozen up to 24 hours.
I am often question the motivation of utilities pushing for "conservation." Their revenue comes from power "sales."
