Had a blast at the first day of our Midsummer Flowers and Fun event! Here's a little tour of the nursery for those of you who haven't visited yet. Come back today (July 4th) at 12-6 PM for more music, living history, and hands-on activities!
Not many prairie wildflowers bloom in the spring, but shooting star is one of them! Though unrelated to nightshades (like tomato plants), its flowers have a similar structure. That's because both nightshade and shooting star have evolved to be pollinated by queen bumble bees.
This blue-eyed mary is in our garden beds as a seed source. We hope to be selling them next year! These flowers are winter annuals occuring in rich woods. They often persist in small populations, adding to the seed bank each year so they can erupt when conditions are favorable.

Wild hyacinth (Camassia scilloides) blooming in our prairie. Its genus name comes from "Qém'es", the Nez Perce name for Camassia quamash, a similar species in the western United States. The word means "sweet" because the bulbs of both C. scilloides and C. quamash are edible!
Still haven’t claimed your FREE tree or shrub? We still have about 100 left to give away! That includes this smooth rose (Rosa blanda), a thornless species that is listed as potentially threatened in the state of Ohio.
Our precious wild lupine is finally ready to be sold! Wild lupine occurs around Lake Erie and requires sandy, well-drained soil. It is listed as potentially threatened in the state of Ohio and is the sole host for federally endangered Karner blue butterfly caterpillars.
We're a nursery in more ways than one! A field sparrow and her five chicks have taken up residence in our wrinkle-leaved goldenrod. More native plants -> more caterpillars -> more baby birds 🐣
Looking for milkweeds? Late frosts and snow kept us from bringing out our sensitive milkweeds, but now we’ve got swamp, whorled, and poke milkweeds for sale, with more to come soon. Feel free to call and check our availability before driving up :)
Don’t have room for a garden? Why not plant a pollinator pot? Loving this little arrangement of great white trillium and appendaged waterleaf in our greenhouse today.
Occasional enemy of lawn perfectionists, common blue violet is an underrated garden plant. This beauty is deer resistant, tolerant of sun and shade, and host to fritillary butterflies. Its leaves persist through fall, making it a great native ground cover 🌱

Small but striking, rue anemone is a spring ephemeral that can be found in Ohio’s woodlands. Plant it in a shade garden for pinkish-white blooms in early spring.
Is there anything as delicate and lovely as a drift of wild spring beauties? These ephemeral wildflowers are an important source of food for pollinators early in the spring, when little else is blooming.
Plants are coming out of the greenhouses to harden off in preparation for opening day. April 18th - mark your calendars! We will be open Sat-Mon at 12-6 PM each week, as well as by appointment.
We have been loving the scent of woodland phlox. It smells just like lilacs! Phlox has semi-evergreen leaves which are perfect for a native groundcover in shady areas of your yard.
The gifts of genetic diversity 💗 Virginia bluebells usually have pink buds that blossom into blue flowers, but nature occasionally produces an oddball. We discovered one pot of these pink bluebells in our greenhouse!
